A simple Brooklyn address has become one of the most recognizable symbols in the Jewish world: 770 Eastern Parkway. Three numbers that, on their own, are enough to describe an entire universe.
A house that became the center of the world
In 1940, the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, fleeing war-torn Europe, settled at 770 Eastern Parkway, in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. The red brick building became the world headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. From 1951, his son-in-law and successor, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, led one of the most influential Jewish revival movements in modern history from there for over forty years — sending emissaries to the remotest corners of the planet.
Why this number became a sign
Over time, "the 770" ceased to be an address and became a proper noun. Faithful replicas of the building — same facade, same gables — have been built in Kfar Chabad in Israel, in Melbourne, and elsewhere: a rare occurrence, an architecture that has become an emblem. The number itself carries a teaching beloved by Chassidim: 770 is the numerical value of the word פרצת ("paratsta"), taken from the verse "you shall spread out to the west, east, north, and south" (Genesis 28:14) — the very vocation of the movement: to radiate without borders.

To wear the 770 is not to wear a logo: it is to wear an idea — that a modest place can become a global rallying point when it is animated by a mission. Heritage in motion, discreet pride, belonging without a slogan.
