Why do some clothes bear the numbers 13, 148, 613? Welcome to gematria — the system that gives each Hebrew letter a numerical value, and each word a meaningful number.
How it works
Each letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a value: alef = 1, beth = 2… up to tav = 400. The value of a word is the sum of its letters. When two words share the same value, tradition sees a semantic link — a numerical echo between ideas.
Numbers to know
13 — Ahava (אהבה, love) and E'had (אחד, one) both equal 13: to love is to unite. This is the heart of our Collection 13.
18 — 'Hai (חי, life) is worth 18: that's why donations are made in multiples of 18.
148 — the value of Na'hman (נחמן): the number of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, carried by our entire Collection 148.
613 — the number of mitzvot in the Torah: 248 positive commandments, 365 prohibitions. The Collection 613 is dedicated to it.
A language, not magic
Gematria is not a divination tool: it is a language of memory and meditation, used by commentators to connect ideas. To wear a number is to carry this link — readable by those who know, elegant for all.
