Ein Od Milvado (אין עוד מלבדו) means "there is nothing besides Him." Four words, taken from the Torah, have become one of the most powerful meditations in Jewish tradition. An explanation.
The Source: Deuteronomy 4:35
The verse says: "To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God—ein od milvado, there is nothing besides Him." This is not merely the assertion that there is only one God: it is the assertion that no reality exists independently of Him.
The "Shield" of Rabbi Chaim Volozhin
In Nefesh HaChaim (III, 12), Rabbi Chaim Volozhin teaches: he who fixes in his heart that there is nothing besides Him—that no force in the world has independent power—places himself above these forces. This is the source of the reputation of "protection" attached to this meditation: not a magic formula, but a complete change of perspective.
A Thought for Today
Ein Od Milvado addresses modern anxiety at its root: if nothing has independent power—neither a boss, nor a bank, nor a trial—then fear changes its nature. What remains is righteous action, and trust (see our article on the difference between Emunah and Bitachon).
