There are words that we translate, and words that we inhabit. EMET (אמת) — truth — belongs to the latter category. It is the word that gave our house its name, and this is no coincidence.

"The seal of the Holy One, blessed be He, is emet"

The teaching is in the Talmud (Shabbat 55a): the very seal of the Creator — His signature, His mark — is emet, truth. Not power, not glory: truth. In a world where everything is negotiated, where images are retouched and discourses are adapted to the audience, this two-thousand-year-old phrase sounds like a manifesto.

The secret of the three letters

Look at how the word is written: א (aleph), מ (mem), ת (tav). Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, mem is in its middle, tav is the last. Truth encompasses everything: the beginning, the middle, the end. It is stable — the sages note that each of its letters rests on a solid base. Falsehood, sheker (שקר), on the other hand, is written with neighboring letters, piled up, standing on one leg: it always ends up falling.

Truth as a discipline, not a slogan

Telling the truth is easy when it suits us. The discipline begins when it costs: keeping one's word when no one is checking anymore, refusing the exaggeration that would sell better, remaining the same in public and in private. It is this demand that the word carries — and that is why we choose to carry it with us.
