148 on the front. THERE IS NO DESPAIR on the back. The t-shirt that carries, in large letters, the best-known phrase of Rabbi Nahman of Breslev, in English and in Hebrew, in a dripping brush-painted lettering.
On the front, in the center of the chest, a very large 148 drawn in white brush strokes, with drips and splatters. On the back, over three lines, THERE IS NO DESPAIR in the same style, and below it in Hebrew אין ייאוש (ein yeouch, “there is no despair”). On the sleeves: the EMETH signature on one side, the Breslev flame on the other.
There is no despair
Rabbi Nahman teaches it in Likoutey Moharan (II, 78): ein shoum yeouch ba-olam klal, “there is no despair in the world at all”. The t-shirt keeps its heart, in two words. It's not a promise that everything will be fine; it's the affirmation that you never have the right to believe yourself lost, however hard the fall, because there is always a way back up.
And 148? It's the gematria of Nahman (נחמן: 50 + 8 + 40 + 50), the number of the whole EMETH collection dedicated to Rabbi Nahman. To go further: who was Rabbi Nahman of Breslev and our guide to the gematria of Hebrew numbers.
